How Can Life Insurance Protect Your Special Needs Child?

If you have a special needs child, you spend a great deal of your time taking care of him or her. You likely have taken steps to ensure that he or she is happy, healthy and living a full life. Yet, it is hard to think about what could happen if you were not able to be there to meet your child's needs. As a parent, you need to think about your child's needs now and well into the future, even if you are not there to do so. That includes maintaining quality Life Insurance. life insurance spelled out in wood blocks

Most parents plan for taking care of their children while they are still dependents. Yet, for those with special needs, that dependency may not go away at the age of 18. Your child might need assistance, including financial support, for a much longer stretch of time. Life Insurance can help, and you’ll see why after asking yourself the following questions.

  • Who will care for your child if you cannot do so?
  • Will those individuals have the financial ability to meet your child's needs and maintain his or her quality of life?
  • What financial support does your child need for the rest of his or her life?

When considering coverage options, it’s important to ask how much insurance is necessary to meet your child's needs above and beyond what he or she may get for the rest of his or her life. It's wise to work closely with your financial planner and insurance agent to find the right balance here.

It’s always a good idea to review your Life Insurance policy on a regular basis. Doing so can help you to avoid mistakes and help you to better access your child's long-term needs. Life Insurance remains an important part of caring for your child if you are not there to meet those needs otherwise. Take the time to consider how much coverage is necessary.
